Exhibition: One Trial – Four Languages. The Pioneers of Interpreting at Nuremberg
At the heart of this exhibition, shown to coincide with the World Congress of the International Federation of Translators (FIT) this August in Berlin, are the interpreters who served during the Nuremberg Trials against leading figures of the Nazi regime.
An exhibition of AIIC Region Germany at the DGB Haus Berlin (Wittenbergplatz), August 4-9, 2014
At the heart of this exhibition, which goes on show for the first time in Berlin this August, are the interpreters who served during the Nuremberg Trials against leading figures of the Nazi regime. The main proceedings in Nuremberg took place in 1945 and 1946 with four languages spoken actively in court: English, French, Russian and German. At the time, simultaneous interpreting was still very much in its infancy. During what have become known as the Nuremberg Trials – one main proceeding plus twelve follow-up trials that continued until 1949 – the interpreters ensured smooth communication between the judges, prosecutors, the defense, the defendants and witnesses. Their work also constituted the breakthrough of the simultaneous technique. Using documents and images from almost seven decades ago, the exhibition examines the lives and careers of the interpreters who covered these historic trials.
